OUR HISTORY

Sólar was founded by Einar Ólafsson in January of 2002. Einar passed away before his time on April 17th, 2007. Einar‘s grandfather, Karl Ásgeirsson, owned the land that the company currently stands on from 1936-1940, therefore Einar cared about the land.

He knew that in order for the company to thrive he would need good employees and a good working atmosphere. As soon as the company was established, he built the staff policy based on positive feedback at every opportunity to strengthen the company‘s employees.

Sólar was first housed in Þverholt where Einar, the founder of Sólar, ran the Egilsborg guesthouse alongside the cleaning company.

Sólar‘s first project was cleaning Nettó in Mjódd and the picture below shows Einar along with El Mahfoud Bouanba, the first employee of Sólar, and Þórsteinn Ágústsson, the current Chief Executive Officer of Sólar.

In 2004, Sólar moved into a larger building on Askalind in Kópavogur. Sólar bought and ran a laundromat there for two years.

In 2006, Sólar then moved to Kleppsmýrarvegur 8, rented at the beginning, but then purchased the premises in April of 2007. In the year of 2021 Sólar moved to Dalshraun 6 in Hafnarfjörður.

In 2007, Sólar became the first licensed cleaning company in Iceland to be certified by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and received the “Kuðunginn” environmental award from the Environment Ministry in the same year.

Below are pictures of some fun events throughout Sólar‘s history

In 2012, Þórsteinn Ágústsson, Chief Executive Officer of Sólar, was awarded a management award from Stjórnvísi.

A beautiful spot in Heiðmörk was created in honour of Einar Ólafsson, the founder of Sólar, in 2007, the year in which he passed away, and it is called Einarslundur (Einar‘s Grove).

The signing of a contract between Sólar and the town of Hafnarfjörður in the year 2004. At that time, the contract was the largest cleaning contract in Iceland.

Here you can see some cheerful employees in training at Gámaþjónustan. We at Sólar care very deeply about the environment.

This picture was taken at an Icelandic language course. Many foreign employees at Sólar wish to study Icelandic.

In 2011, we took great pride in cleaning the National University Hospital of Iceland at Hringbraut.
